Flourishing in Fatherhood

Exploring the challenges to mental and physical health fathers face during their transition to parenthood.

The Flourishing in Fatherhood project is exploring the challenges fathers face during their transition to parenthood.Father with his kids

While antenatal programs help pregnant mothers live healthily to enhance pregnancy outcomes, expectant fathers are often treated as secondary to fertility, birthing and parenting processes.

Fathers provide important influences on child development in ways that are unique and independent to those of mothers.

Building on previous research discovery through ORIGINS' CARE-Dads project, which identified substantial cardiovascular and mental health risks in men after the birth of their child, the Flourishing in Fatherhood project will look at the mental and physical health challenges of our ORIGINS Dads. We will also explore what impact the physical and mental health of fathers has on their child.

Who are we looking for?

The project is looking to recruit 600 Fathers over the age of 18. Ideally, we are looking for Dads that have previously provided a blood sample to ORIGINS while their partner was pregnant.

What are we asking our fathers to do?

  • One clinic appointment, where a small sample of blood and urine will be collected, and general measurements, such as height, weight and blood pressure will be taken.
  • You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire reflecting on your experience as a new Dad, as well as your social wellbeing, your family and your general health.
  • A small group of Dads will be asked to join a focus group to further discuss their experiences in the transition to fatherhood. This is not compulsory as part of the project.

Benefits to families

You will receive a free health check-up, where your risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease will be assessed using blood pressure measurements, blood glucose levels and cholesterol levels. Your hormone levels will also be checked. You will receive a copy of the results and these will be explained to you. If any issues are identified, a letter will be provided and you will be encouraged to follow-up with your GP.
